Current Image

The cold weather has some benefits. The MCHS Art department sent out a team to snow sculpt on January 16th through the 18th in Rockford, Illinois. This was the 28th annual Illinois Snow Sculpting competition featuring adult snow sculptors competing to represent Illinois in the National competition held at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

The competition also hosts a high school division including 15 area schools. The MCHS team members were Captain Makayla Pfieffer, Lexi Valentine, Carrie Nims, and David Oakes. The title of sculpture was Embrace. The team worked over twenty hours in the bitter cold to create the final sculpture. They used saws, ice scrapers, saws, shovels and paint scrapers to create the frozen sculpture. The sculpture received the Committee’s Choice Award. Photos can be found at

In addition to these current high school artists, three MCHS graduates competed in the State division. The team known as Frieze Masons, Ryan Ehredt, Sergio Aguilar, and Chris Hansen, created Songs of Yore on Tides of Storm. This was a eight foot snake strangled by a Nordic god. »

Mr. Schirmer's 2nd hour Welding Fabrications class has just completed a Christmas present for the Marengo Park District Hockey Rink. Two brand new regulation size hockey goals with official NHL netting are ready for the hardest slapshots in town! The goals were a collaborative effort of two classes at school and donors from Marengo. Thanks to Deerpass Farms for the donation of the 1 3/8 steel tubing, thanks to Marengo Auto Body for the sandblasting and donation of red paint, and thanks to the MCHS Student Council who purchased and donated the netting. Thanks to Mr. Long's Collision Refinishings class for painting the goals and thanks to Mr. Schirmer's Welding FAB class of 2012-13 for starting the project and Welding FAB class of 2013-14 for finishing the project. The hardest and most time consuming part of the project is lacing on the nets. So special thanks goes to Melanie Thomas, Kassandra Kralik and Brendan Gaines for their effort and having to tolerate Mr. Schirmer's high standard of having the nets stretched as tight as possible! »
