Cell Phones for Soldiers

Every 16 months United States consumers retire an estimated 130 million cell phones and only 2% of those are recycled. There are probably tons of phones in junk drawers across America and others that may be improperly discarded polluting our natural resources.

Marengo Community High School, in conjunction with State Representative Mr. Jack Franks' office have partnered in the 'Cell Phones for Soldiers' project this year as part of our Annual Veterans Day Program. 'Cell Phones for Soldiers' is a national, non-profit program dedicated to serving our troops and veterans with free communication services and emergency funding.

Approximately half of the phones collected will end up being reused as functional phones and may be re-conditioned and re-programmed before being sold to wholesalers from more than 40 countries. Phones that cannot be resold and reused are dismantled and properly recycled. This project will serve to protect our planet and our environment by simply collecting obsolete cell phones and recycling them. More importantly, it will assist in providing our soldiers free talk time and calling cards so they may be in communication with their loved ones while serving our country. Since 2004, 'Cell Phones For Soldiers' has provided more than 216 million minutes of free talk time, provided more than 3 million calling cards, has assisted more than 2,800 veterans with emergency funds, has mailed approximately 1,500 calling cards a week, and prevented more than 11.7 million phones from ending up in landfills.

MCHS will be a designated community drop-off site for recyclable cell phones, chargers, and batteries. Drop off hours are Monday through Friday during normal business hours at the following four locations in the building: in the commons outside the gym, in the Student Services Office, the Administration Office, and the District Office. The Marengo Community High School Volleyball Program and Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) will host a “Volley for the Cure” match against North Boone High School on Wednesday, October 19, 2016. Volley for the Cure was created as a way to honor and celebrate the fight against breast cancer with the hopes that this devastating disease will one day be cured.

Each year, MCHS volleyball teams donate themed baskets and collect donations from individuals and local community businesses to be raffled or sold via silent auction immediately following the Volley for the Cure match. All proceeds collected from the raffle/auction will be presented to three local women that are fighting breast cancer. These three women are alumni of MCHS and participated in the volleyball program.

We are hoping to get several local businesses to donate gift certificates or goods/services to be raffled that evening. If you wish to make a donation to this cause, please contact Meg Dobbertin at Donations will be accepted through October 17th.

Thank you for helping the MCHS and North Boone volleyball programs along with HOSA raise money for the fight against breast cancer. »
