New Mandarin Chinese I for 2009-2010

Attention Marengo High School Students

We are excited to announce the addition of Mandarin Chinese to our curriculum for the 2009-2010 school year. Harvard and Marengo Community High School District were jointly awarded a state grant for the program. The grant will include the addition of a Mandarin Chinese I class for the 2009-2010 school year and the addition of a Mandarin Chinese II class the 2010-2011 school year.

Why Chinese?

China has a population of 1.3 billion people compared to the U.S. population of 300,000,000. China is the fastest growing economy in the increasing global world and economy which we live in.

Mandarin Chinese I will introduce students to the basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing Chinese. An emphasis will be on listening comprehension and speaking. The Chinese culture will also be studied.

Mandarin Chinese II will give students a more extensive understanding of the basic knowledge and more advanced skills of reading and writing.

Our hope is to offer Mandarin Chinese III and IV in the future if there is sufficient interest.

Students who are interested in adding Mandarin Chinese I to their 2009-2010 schedule, should sign up in the guidance office and see their guidance counselor by Monday, March 30. They will need to remove one elective credit from their previous course requests. »
