Marengo High School made a very strong showing in the Automotive Refinishing contest. Jacob Heinberg placed fourth at the high school level and Dustin VonEyser (who had just missed going to nationals last year for Marengo High School) finished in eighth place at the college level this year for Waubonsee college. Congratulations Jacob and Dustin on a remarkable job!

The 49th annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) that took place June 22nd-28th in Kansas City, Missouri was a major event, with 98 contests and 6000 competitors competing in this weeklong event. Students from all over the nation gathered to compete at their career oriented hands-on contest for skilled trades, ranging from Automotive Refinishing Technology, to Welding and Fabrication, and almost everything in-between. In order to qualify to compete at the national level for SkillsUSA, each contestant had to place first or second at the state level (our boys both placed first at state). Each state is then allowed to send only one contestant per level (one secondary and one post secondary) for each of the 98 contests. The Automotive Refinishing contest had many sections that the students were scored in. There was an ASE written test, an interview, a refinishing spot repair, a featheredge - prime and block repair, color tinting, masking, color identification, and a written estimate test.

Mike Rowe from Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs, was the keynote speaker at the opening ceremony. He spoke about how hard work and skilled labor are what built these United States, and how the decline in classes where skilled trades are taught are hurting our work force. There are good jobs for skilled tradesmen that are not being filled, and SkillsUSA is an important step to improving this problem. We hope many more students qualify for this national competition in the future. »
